How to choose the right floor
Most people start by looking for the best-looking products at the best price. While this is natural, it may not always result in the right product. Due to the variety of Better Floors Carpentry LLC products, for example, will result in dozens of matches but will not provide other important criteria such as whether the design matches your architectural style, lifestyle or long term goals. It's always best to learn about all the features you're buying and why they cost what they do.
1-strip gives an intense wood feel. It's sawn from a single piece of wood and provides a natural appearance of wood, with knots and variations in color and grain. Most collections that use 1-strip are 7 1/2" wide x 5/8" thick x 86" long and cost the most. These all look the best in large rooms.
2-strip has more character because the strips are selected and arranged to give each plank a unique feeling. They usually cost less than 1-strip because they use shorter pieces with more variation in color and grade of wood. 2-strip usually offers a cleaner look than 3-strip, and works well in large or small rooms.
3-strip offers the widest range of design options. It has lots of variation in color because each plank is made of three strips of random lengths. It usually costs less than 1 and 2-strip because it uses much shorter pieces with a wide variety of color.
Dutch pattern (also called Tapis) is a classic looking floor that is reminiscent of traditional large estate homes. It has a unique repeating pattern with three short pieces running lengthwise separated by a perpendicular piece. This is also at the upper end price-wise.
Surface treatment

Nature-oiled finishes bring out the fine structure and grain of the wood and deepens the natural wood color. The patina of the floor becomes more beautiful over time. It's also much easier to repair scratches and dents without having to resurface the entire floor. This is a huge advantage. Oiled finishes show much less dirt than other surface treatments because they are very matte. Floors treated with Nature oil are also easy to maintain and keep clean but they need a little more care and they need to be oiled at regular intervals depending upon use. Silk/Matte, the standard for 80% of all Better Floors Carpentry LLC 3 and 2-strip floors, has a satin luster that accentuates the wood's character and makes it durable and easy to keep clean. (Harmony, World, American Traditional, American Natural, Scandinavian Natural, Tres, Sonata)
Matte finish wears just like Silk/Matte but gives the impression of bare wood as there is virtually no sheen. (Bayside and Vineyard Collection)
Refining treatment
Wire-brushed and Hand-scraped finishes highlight the natural grain and add texture. This is usually done with deep beveled edges and costs more than smooth finishes.
Knots and cracks also cost more due to the extra work in filling and sealing them.
A smooth finish with beveled edges accentuates each individual board and gives a more distinct elegant look. Bevels vary in degrees from micro-beveling to stronger deeper bevels to provide a rustic robust appearance. Beveled products are usually more expensive than square edges.

Staining enhances the natural color tones and provides a completely unique look and feel. Staining blends natural variations in color so the boards look more uniform. Another benefit is that darker stains resist UV fading better than natural finishes.
